Why is Butcher’s good for my dog?

Made with fresh meat and no artificial colourings, flavourings or preservatives, all Butcher’s recipes are packed with natural nutrition. Butcher’s contains all the vitamins and minerals your dog needs, so he’ll be as ‘fit as a Butcher’s dog'.

Why will my dog like Butcher’s?
Butcher’s has extremely high levels of palatability, because it is made with fresh meat and is not bulked out with cereal or soya.  This gives your dog more of what he really loves – real meat.  And because each recipe is developed with leading experts, you can be sure that every meal is providing your dog with the essential vitamins and mineral he needs.

Why is tripe good for my dog?
Tripe contains the essential fatty acids amino 3 and 6, which help muscle development.  Tripe is also a good source of naturally occurring minerals and nutrients that are essential in preserving your dog’s health.  Tripe is also known to promote a healthy skin and coat.  And as every Butcher’s dog knows, it tastes great!

Do Butcher’s add any artificial additives to their products?
No, all Butcher's recipes contain nothing artificial as at Butcher’s we believe in natural nutrition for pets and therefore we do not cram our recipes full of artificial colourings, flavourings or preservatives, ensuring your dog only gets the best ingredients and nutrition.

Does Butcher’s contain cereal or soya?
No – bulking out dog food with cereal and soya not only reduces the amount of meat included in the recipe, but can also cause allergy problems, particularly for dogs with a gluten intolerance.  Therefore, by producing dog foods that do not contain cereal or soya, not only are we providing a healthy diet for Britain’s dogs, but we are also making delicious dog foods – no cereal or soya means more meat, which dogs love.

How much salt is contained in Butcher’s products?
Butcher’s don’t add any salt to any of our recipes.
Between 0.2% and 0.5% of a can of Butcher’s is salt.  All of this is naturally occurring, as the fresh meat is so delicious it isn’t needed!  As all Butcher’s products are complete meals this equates to all of your dog’s recommended daily allowance of salt.

Feeding:

How much should I feed my dog?
We have included a feeding guide on the back of all our Butcher’s products as an estimate for how much you should be feeding your dog.  A copy of one of these can be found below.  However, you know your dog best, so you’re the best person to decide how much he should be fed.  Remember to take his activity levels into account – feed him more if he’s constantly on the move and less if he enjoys a more relaxed lifestyle.

Should I feed mixer with Butcher’s?
Because Butcher’s is a complete food, it contains all the essential vitamins and minerals your dog needs to keep him happy and healthy.  However, if you decide you would like to feed your dog dry food as well, ensure you are feeding a suitable combination of both dry and wet food, according to how much mixer you wish to add.

My dog doesn’t eat a full can of Butcher’s in one meal; is it OK to store the rest in the fridge?
You can store Butcher’s in the fridge for up to three days.  However, as with all canned produce, we do recommend that you keep it in a sealed plastic container, not in the can.  To ensure your dog gets to fully enjoy the delicious flavours of his Butcher’s remember to return the food to room temperature before serving.

My dog currently eats another brand of dog food; can I change him onto Butcher’s?
Yes, you can!  Any change in food should take place over a number of days.  The amount of new food given should gradually increase until becoming the majority of the dish.  If your dog is on a special diet please consult your vet before making any changes to his diet.

Is Butcher’s suitable for puppies?
To ensure your new puppy receives the specialist diet he needs, we’ve teamed up with leading nutritionists to develop the Butcher’s Puppy range.  With calcium and phosphorus (for healthy teeth and bones), added sunflower oil (to give your puppy oodles of energy) and added fats and oils (for a healthy skin and coat), feeding your new little friend Butcher’s Puppy will ensure he grows up to be as ‘fit as a Butcher’s dog’.  You can now also get the goodness of the Butcher’s Puppy range from Butcher’s Choice.  As Butcher’s Choice is specially formulated for small dogs, Butcher’s Choice Puppy is perfect for little puppies that will grow up to be little dogs.

My dog is gluten intolerant; can he eat Butcher’s?
Absolutely.  Many of our competitors use gluten in their dog foods, in the form of gluten chunks that look like real meat but actually have much less taste and nutritional value than the real meat we put in our recipes at Butcher’s. Because all of our recipes do not contain cereal, every single Butcher’s product is suitable for dogs with gluten intolerance.

I’ve got a small dog; what should I feed him?
We have developed the Butcher’s Choice range with small dogs in mind.  The specially formulated all-meat recipes will provide your small dog with all the essential nutrients he needs, without any artificial colourings, flavourings or preservatives.  And of course they taste great!

Should dogs eat vegetables?
Although the dogs of thousands of years ago were carnivores, they have evolved into omnivores so now can eat, and enjoy, vegetables.  As with your diet, vegetables contain vitamins and minerals that will help keep your dog healthy.

Should dogs eat pasta?
Pasta contains gluten, which can exacerbate allergies in some dogs.  As a result, we don’t put pasta in any of our Butcher’s products.  However, if your dog does not have a gluten intolerance, eating pasta should not cause him any harm.

What is best for my dog – loaf, chunks in jelly or chunks in gravy products?
Butcher’s all-meat loaf, all-meat chunks in jelly and all-meat chunks in gravy recipes all contain fresh meat and all the essential nutrients your dog needs, so no one type of Butcher’s is better for your dog than any other.  However, your dog might have a personal preference for one sort of dog food, so you might like to feed him that one.  However, as variety is the spice of life, you could feed your dog different formats (loaf, chunks in gravy and chunks in jelly) and different flavours.  Go to ‘Products’ to see a full list of all Butcher’s recipes.

How do I help my dog lose weight?
If you are concerned about your dog’s weight, you should consult your vet for information about how to help him slim down.  The theory is just the same as with humans – reduce food intake and increase exercise.  But make sure your dog continues to get all the essential nutrients he needs.
